Broken link checker for public storefront links
Unpublished products and retired categories leave links behind. Mortise watches the public pages it can fetch and tells you when a link that worked starts failing.
No card required. 1 site and 200 pages on the free plan.
What is in scope
Start from a public homepage or catalogue URL you verify. Mortise crawls same-host HTML up to the page cap and checks links on those pages. A product or category URL that is linked from a crawled page can be classified. External assets linked from those pages, such as a PDF or a CDN file, are checked too.
Page caps matter on catalogues: 200 pages per crawl on Free, 2000 on Pro. Mortise stops at the cap. It does not promise every SKU on a large store.
What is out of scope
Mortise does not log in, submit forms, or walk a checkout that sits behind authentication. Cart and account URLs that only work for a logged-in customer are not a reliable signal. It also does not place orders or edit products. When it reports a 404, you fix the link in the store.
How a product 404 becomes an alert
If the product URL was ok on the baseline and then returns 404 on two later crawls, it shows under New breaks with the source page, often a collection or another product. If the URL was already 404 on the first crawl, it is a known issue and stays off the alert. Run the baseline while the catalogue is in the state you consider normal.
Questions
Will Mortise test checkout?
No. It fetches public pages and the links they contain. It does not create a session or pay.
Does it understand my ecommerce platform?
It understands HTML links and HTTP status codes. It has no special Shopify, WooCommerce, or marketplace integration.
A product is out of stock, not deleted. Will that alert?
Only if the URL itself returns 404 or 410 twice. A 200 page that says sold out is a working URL to Mortise.
